Daily News focuses on important political, economic, and environmental news around the world. It also covers stories on the impact of these events on human society and nature. Its editorial team strives to provide unbiased, comprehensive and factual reporting to its readers. It is the first American newspaper to be printed in tabloid format. Its current circulation is over 2.4 million copies daily. It is the 11th largest newspaper in the United States. It is owned by New York Daily News LLC, which is a division of Tronc. The paper was founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson and became the New York Daily News in 1922.
Throughout the 1920s, the News was known for its sensational and investigative reporting, especially on the subject of organized crime. Its reporters frequently uncovered corruption and abuse of power by local, state, and federal government agencies and officials. The News was also noted for its emphasis on photography and was an early user of Associated Press wirephotography. The News also featured intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics and a sports section.
In the 1940s, the News was one of the first newspapers to employ color photographs in its stories. It was also the first to introduce a radio news service in the city, WPIX-AM, whose call letters were based on its nickname, “New York’s Picture Newspaper.” The News moved from its home at 220 East 42nd Street to its current headquarters at 450 West 33rd Street (known as Manhattan West), designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood, in 1995. The 42nd Street building still contains a large globe in its lobby, and the News’ former television subsidiary, WPIX-TV, remains there.
Each article in the Daily News comes with comprehension and critical thinking questions, as well as additional “Background” and “Resources” sections that can help students better understand the story.
