Law new is a term used to describe the way in which legal services are provided in the modern day. This includes finding new ways to work with clients, using technology and creating strategies that may not have been part of standard practice in the past. It can be hard to define, but generally, it means that lawyers are looking for innovative ways to provide legal services.
The legislative process begins with an idea for a policy change. This can come from a senator’s constituents, a lobbyist, an interest group or even a state agency. Once the idea for a bill has been settled on, it must be written in the form of a bill draft. This is done by a member of the Senate’s staff or by an outside attorney hired for this purpose.
Once the bill draft has been completed, it is sent to a committee for consideration. The committee will study the bill and make any needed changes to it. Once the bill has been amended, it is returned to the Senate for a vote on whether or not to pass it. If the Senate passes a bill, it will go to the House of Representatives for consideration. The process is similar in the House of Representatives, but with minor differences.
If a bill is passed in both houses, it will return to the Governor for approval. The Governor has 10 days to sign or veto the bill. If the Governor signs a bill, it becomes law. If the Governor vetoes a bill, it will fail. The Governor can also choose to “override” a veto by sending the bill back to the Senate with instructions to approve it.
The public has a right to know how government makes decisions and the facts that support those decisions. This right to knowledge is fundamental to our society. It should not be thwarted by the shroud of confidentiality and secrecy that surrounds many governmental records.
Access to the laws and records of a government agency should be convenient, readily available and affordable. Where possible, a government agency should utilize existing technology to provide public access to its records. When technology is unavailable or prohibitively expensive, a government agency should provide alternative methods for the public to access its records.
