Daily news is a newspaper that covers local, national and international events. Its award-winning writers, columnists and opinion formers bring you the very best live coverage of New York City, as well as news from the world beyond. Daily News has the best live news, New York exclusives and politics, plus gossip and entertainment. And no one covers the Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets like us.
The Daily News was the first tabloid newspaper in the United States and reached its peak circulation in 1947. It has since struggled to compete with its muscular hometown tabloid rival, the News Corp-owned New York Post, while suffering from a general decline in newspaper readership and advertising revenue as more people turn to online sources for their news. In recent years, the Daily News has experimented with different business models in an effort to bolster revenue, including offering a paid online version of its paper and adding video and other content to its website.
In its early days, the Daily News found abundant subject matter in political wrongdoing (such as the Teapot Dome Scandal) and social intrigue (such as the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII). The News also emphasized photography, and was an early adopter of the Associated Press wirephoto service. It once maintained local bureaus in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. The News also owned WPIX-TV and WFAN-AM radio.
Each day the Daily News publishes a digital edition, available to registered readers who pay a subscription fee. It is a full-featured, interactive replica of the printed newspaper and is designed to provide readers with the same reading experience as the print version. Users can read the entire newspaper or navigate to a specific section. In addition, they can view videos and other content such as photo galleries, classified ads and comics.
Each article in the eNewspaper includes comprehension and critical thinking questions, which can be found below each story. Students can use these questions to help them understand the news and develop higher level thinking skills. Each question is linked to additional resources such as video clips, maps and links that can assist with the answers.
The Yale Daily News Historical Archive was made possible by a generous gift from an anonymous Yale alumnus in 2021. This gift facilitated the migration of the archive to a new, user-friendly platform and enabled the addition of more issues from 1996 to the present. The archive is continually expanding and will eventually cover all the editions of the Daily News from its inception to 2015. In order to support the ongoing work of the archive, please consider making a donation. Your support is essential to our success. Click here for more information on the archive and to make a gift. The Daily News Historical Archive is part of the Yale University Library. It is supported by a grant from the Council on Library and Information Science. For more information on the history of the newspaper, see the Daily News website.
